Progression

University Research

To help us make the best decision we can for ourselves when moving into University, we had to look into a university given to us and research the needs for the course so we could gather the most pertinent information for the class. I had to gather information on Northampton University and then present the information I could gather to the class so they could see if they were interested themselves so they could go and look themselves.

Jobs In Games Journalism and PR

PR Manager - A PR manager works to make sure that the company they work for are communicating to the general public and their fans the information they want to release. They have interviews with journalists that want to know about their game and make sure that the journalists will report the correct information.

Community Manager - A community managers job is to communicate with their companies fans and keep the conversation two way so that the fans know they are being heard by the company. Their job is also to sell their product on social media platforms and keep people updated on their product.

Editor - An editors job is to edit what the journalist writes so that the piece stays interesting and that there are no major errors.

This is where we took a questionnaire to see what profession would be best for us going forward. The questionnaire asked us a simple question and we had 3 pictures to choose from, we had to chose what called to us the most as quick as possible. I did 2 the first I felt like it might not have given the best results because I felt rushed and pressured so I took a second one. I'm not pleased with the answers of either one.

This is where i got in touvh with a games company about a possible trip me and my class could go on, to get a etter look into the industry the majority of us wanted to progress forward onto.

CV

This is the CV I created it is fairly simple and looks quite sparse but that is because my lack of experience working. I have noted all of my qualifications and experience.
You can find my digital portfolio: https://www.artstation.com/artist/conorrab

This is a look at some of the work I have done while at college. Including last years FMP and the standout work of this year.

Traditional Skills Portfolio

Textures

Our first texture was rock, which I struggled with, I wasn't very comfortable in blending the more monotone shading as I usually am with more colourful projects. I also didn't get as much time to focus on it as I wish I had. While I found it helpful overall I wasn't pleased with the outcome I got.

I found wood to be easier because of its colour and the fact that it has a bit more easily definable detail that you can add in such as the knots and gaps between planks. I still found it rather difficult because of the level of detail and how realistic I was trying to make it look, I feel like I made it more difficult for myself when I could have gone for a more stylised look. Overall I'm happy with the outcome but could have done better with more time and if I had gone with a different angle.

I struggled painting waves because of the level of detail needed to make them look believable. At the end of the day I wasn't happy with them but looking back now, I realise they were better than I originally thought. I feel like the high and low lights are a bit sharp and too heavy for the overall look and I would take the edge off if I was to do this again. Overall I am quite pleased but would make some tweaks and changes.

Ice texture painting. I am not too happy with this I feel Like I could improve upon it but it was the most challenging texture we did.

This was an experimentation on a certain brush and blending overall, to get us better at blending our colour.

This is a Eye observational Painting and the painting I am most proud of. I feel like this is one of the best painting I have ever done but I can still see where I would improve such as the shadow on the eye is too severe and that the eye is missing lashes.

Human Observation

This is where I sketched other students or teachers and learnt how to correctly draw people and more organic forms compared to the more hard surface textures. I found this a lot harder and less interesting because I prefer to draw textures and objects more than organic and soft surfaces.

Self-Expert Document

Since I have started on this course I have learnt many skills, in particular how to create models in Maya using the sculpting tools and how to UV a model in preparation of texturing it. I have also learnt how to texture using Photoshop and Unreal material editor, both hand painted and PBR textures. I feel like these skills in particular make me more employable because they are important skills that every artist in the games industry will need. Learning these skills also opens up different software and techniques that will now be easier for me to learn and become proficient at, such as Substance Painter and Designer and also Zbrush and other modelling software.

Technical Glossary

Budget
This is what I am expecting to pay for and how much it would cost me in a usual shop at University. This isn't going to be able to be bought with my base budget, so I will need to apply for jobs.

2 Year Plan

In the next year I am at University studying Games Journalism at Staffordshire University, I also plan on getting a part time job while at University so that I can have enough money for food and other necessities.
